7PM | $20/22 | with Silverstein, Texas in July, Letlive., Fire From The Gods
This Saturday August Burns Red and Silverstein, two of the most battle-tested metalcore bands from the past decade, are hitting Emo’s East on the first leg of their expansive U.S. tour. In 2005 August Burns Red exploded onto the scene with Thrill Seeker, an impressive debut that showcased their technical precision with an onslaught of complicated time signatures and brutal breakdowns. Each album that followed was only a more refined version of the latter, maintaining the same aggressive demeanor while upgrading gnarly hardcore riffs for arena-worthy lead lines. Last summer they released their fourth studio album, Leveler, via Solid State Records and it landed at No. 11 on the Billboard charts - amidst all the Keshas and Taylor Swifts, a metalcore band almost cracked the top ten. That should tell you that these guys are not to be overlooked, and with a bill as stacked as Saturday’s is, you’re not going to want to let this opportunity slip by. No Control Radio sponsors another killer show.

Last weekend the brand new Beauty Ballroom opened its doors at 2015 E. Riverside. Though it was only a soft opening, as the official Grand Opening is this weekend with Theophilus London on Friday and Daniel Johnston on Saturday, both Kendrick Lamar and the RAC DJs boasted two impressive performances to christen Austin’s newest venue. Check out more photos below and make sure to grab your tickets for this weekend.

Last spring Austin Psych Fest took over the now-defunct Seaholm Power Plant, edging out Jay-Z and Kayne’s SXSW performance as the final event of the venue’s short tenure. This year the music and multimedia festival is heading east side, spaning both Emo’s East and the brand new Beauty Ballroom April 27-29th. The Reverbnation Appreciation Society and the Black Angels have compiled another monstrous lineup as 90’s psych-revivalists Brian Jonestown Massacre headline alongside The Black Lips, with an additional 20+ bands to be announced in March. Weekend passes go on sale this Saturday at 12PM (CST) at both the Emo’s and Austin Psych Fest websites, keep watch here on the Emo’s blog for the latest updates and lineup additions.

When we announced here on the Emo’s blog that legendary surf-rockers-from-another-dimension Man or Astro-man? were playing a reunion show at 603 Red River we advised that things might get a little out of hand. “This reminds me of our third show ever,” said guitarist Star Crunch (Brian Causey) at one point, “I remember it well, it was a house party right down the street from where I lived.” Whether that’s good or bad was never made clear, but it was obvious that Man or Astro-man rang in one memorable performance complete with beer-spraying fans and space suit costume changes. Check out more photos from their set below.

Last weekend two of Austin’s mainstay punk bands, Cruiserweight and Riddlin’ Kids, took over Emo’s East in what was a trip down memory lane for most of those in attendance. As both bands officially broke up within the last few years their hometown crowd proved their loyalty, packing out the brand new Emo’s East that had it feeling just as intimate as the days at 603 Red River. Check out more photos below and keep an eye out for some more interactive show recaps here on the Emo’s blog.

This Saturday the legendary Wu-Tang Clan will be making a special appearance at Emo’s East featuring a bumper lineup of Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Gza, U-God, Masta Killa, DJ Allah Mathematics, DJ Street Life and the son of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Young Dirty. As RZA has been filming a martial arts movie with Russel Crowe that caused him to miss the group’s reunion shows in Australia this past August, he has unfortunately been absent from the current Wu-Fest Tour that wraps up at the end of this month. Tickets are going quick so don’t slack or you just might miss out on the biggest party so far this new year. Get your W’s up!

Since forming in 1999, the band’s membership has expanded and contracted while the sonic landscapes have grown with each release. My Education has released 5 full-length albums including a 12” vinyl collaboration with avant-hip hop duo Dalek. A staple in the instrumental community, they have been remixed by members of the bands Kinski, Pelican, Red Sparowes and Dalek. Don’t miss them tear up Emo’s East with their energetic blend of instrumental post-rock in the vein of vintage This Will Destroy You. Quiet Company, Follow That Bird and Speak round out a bill that will have you wondering, “How can this show really be free?” Don’t ask questions, just be happy your weekly allowance for beer money got a much needed boost.

After nearly two decades as the definitive venue in a city that is known as the live music capital of the world, Emo’s closed its doors last Friday, Dec. 30th. Though Emo’s outside hadn’t housed an act since DFA graffitied the walls during ACL weekend, Emo’s Jr. remained open until just before the new year with a series of concerts featuring the most coveted Austin bands from past and present. Noise-rock pioneers Killdozer played before a packed house for nearly two hours, ringing in a stellar performance that paid just tribute to the Emo’s legacy. Check out photos from the show below and keep watch for a slew of shows coming to Emo’s East in early 2012.
